The “I” stands for Italy with this interesting blend of Negroamaro, Nero d’Avola and Barbera grape varieties. Crimson red in color, it opens with aromas of raspberries, plum and dried lavender. The flavor profile is one of lush berry compote, with hints of warm spices and lavender flavors standing out. This is a juicy wine, with ample yet silky tannins, and pairs well with hamburgers. Yet the wine is no mere “burger wine,” just as Greg’s Sirloin Black Truffle Sliders are no mere “burgers.” The wine’s toasty oak nuances and herbal notes complement the earthy truffle flavor featured in the sliders, while the acidity of this Italian wine works well with the lemony, peppery bite of watercress. I like the symmetry of pairing an old-world wine that has a new-world bravado, with a classically American burger that has an old-world spirit.
Locations is one of the latest “projects” from winemaker Dave Phinney, who founded Orin Swift Cellars. Known for his ability to create surprising and unconventional blends, Dave became inspired by those ubiquitous country code stickers found on the backs of cars throughout Europe. His idea was to make distinctive wines from exceptional “Locations” around the world, with the sole purpose of not being constrained by “antiquated” wine rules. He began with E (Spain), which soon after led to F (France), and has now grown to include I (Italy), CA (California), and AR (Argentina). In their own words, “Locations is a simple concept made complicated that ultimately became a great deal of fun.” With new “Locations” planned in the near future, I think the “fun” will continue.
