This is an interesting red blend from Washington state, with aromas of cherry and strawberries with cocoa and sweet spice. Cherry and chocolate stand out on the palate, but darker fruit flavors, such as blackberry are evident as well. I like that this wine is not too heavy, which is nice with leaner cuts of beef like Greg’s Strip Steak, while sufficient tannins prevent the wine from feeling too insubstantial. Nice acidity balances out the wine’s slightly “sweet” fruit, and coming in at under 14% ABV, this is a great summer red wine to accompany a wide range of grilled fare.
Washington is the second-largest wine producing state in the country, yet many wine drinkers don’t pay much attention to Washington wines beyond the behemoth brands like Columbia Crest and Chateau Ste. Michelle. I like Washington State not only for the quality of the wines, but also for the wide variety of grapes grown there. In addition to terrific Cabs, Merlots and Chardonnays, many Washington wine-makers are producing world-class wines made from Syrah, Grenache, Tempranillo, Riesling, Semillon and Chenin Blanc, to name a few.
