WINE: Hugl Weine Grüner Veltliner 2008 (1L)
Pale-straw in color, with bright, crisp aromas of grapefruit, pea shoots and wet gravel. This is a “clean” flavored wine, displaying grapefruit, limes and that distinctive “white pepper” that grü ner veltliners are known for. The wine’s tart acidity cuts through the fried fish’s crispiness, while the wine’s peppery bite compliments the spices in the pan-fried “crust.” The wine feels lean, but it has enough power to stand up to the pickled-pepper relish.
Grüner veltliner is one of those “sleeper” wines that too few people know about. Though once considered a rather pedestrian wine, grüner veltliner is now seen as perhaps Austria’s greatest wine varietal. I recommend GV to anyone who enjoys sauvignon blanc, although in my opinion, grüner veltliner is far more food-friendly. Austria’s national dish, Wiener schnitzel, is a classic pairing. For me, grüner veltliner is the ideal wine with fried chicken!
