Verdicchio di Matelica “Vigneti del Cerro” Belisario

Verdicchio

It takes a very food friendly wine to stand next to the divergent tastes and textures in Greg’s crostini. Verdicchio is well-suited to the job because it is so immensely versatile. It is grown in Le Marche region of Italy– inland of Ancona around Jesi and Matelica. Locally it is considered an everyday thirst quencher. Though it takes an undeserved back seat to pinot grigio in this country. Light straw in color with a slight greenish tinge, this white wine displays aromas of pear and lemon with lightly floral elements. The wine’s palate is defined by a crisp minerality that lies just underneath its peach, pear and subtle almond flavors. The silky mouth-feel and light-to-medium body works well with the fattiness of the salami in this case but its acidity is bright, making it a very easy wine to enjoy.

I know, I know another verdicchio! But Italy is fast becoming ground zero for appealing dry whites and I’m not talking pinot grigio. When it comes to Italian white wines, pinot grigio seems to get all the attention. However, I believe Italy’s “other white wines” are far more interesting, especially those coming from Le Marche region.
