Catdaddy Moonshine is sweet and herbal. Almost like a liqueur. Here I use it as a whiskey replacement in a moonshine cocktail I named Sloe Kitty because it gets it reddish hue from sloe gin.
serves 1
Ingredients
- 1 ounce catdaddy moonshine
- 1 ounce amaretto
- 1 ounce sloe gin
- 1 ounce fresh squeezed orange juice strained of all pulp
Directions
Shake the ingredients vigorously with cracked ice. Strain into a stemmed cocktail glass, or a tall shot glass.
Oh my gosh, your picture of rambutan makes me drool almost. The Hilo market has the BEST RAMBUTAN EVER. Organic, sweet, juicy .… mmmmm.
Wow I love markets and it looks like you certainly found a winner here. What a great glimpse into the bounty that this area offers.
but the thing that really enthralled me was the description of the hike. It reminded me of the bike leg of the IronMan championship that goes through the lava fields, a ride I have always wanted to try even though I’ll qualify for the Ironman.
But hearing about the change of scenery was just captivating. Jealous here.
I guess I always thought of the Islands as that sort of trip, but sounds like you are just totally inspired! Glad you are enjoying yourself!
It’s bad enough you went to Hawaii, but you went to a Hawaiian farmer’s market! I just went to one in Santa Fe that I think is the best I’ve ever been to. It’s very frustrating not to be able to bring much stuff back.
Wow, wish I could squeeze a volcano hike before a tour of a market. I love exotic fruits and seek them out. I have read about the markets in Hawaii and their diversity. One day I will go!
Hilo is one of my favorite places and I LOVE their farmer’s market. If you come to Oahu I’ve got a list for you too.
All this good stuff seems worlds away right now. Fun to live a bit through this foodcation.
Another wonderful post Greg — I loved all the information on bananas — I wish we could get more of those fruits here on the mainland!! When you get back, we may have to plan our own luau — featuring that great salad from the previous post!!!
Greg,
Hawaii has a magical abundance of tropical delights, from coffee, to fruit, to nuts, to flowers. The orchids, macadamia nuts, Kona coffee, pineapples, bananas…an endless variety.
Appreciate your culinary tour of the Hawaiian Islands.
Bon appetit et tres magnifique!

I read a great book called The Fruithunters; all about rare fruit and the people who hunt them. He went on and on about how amazing the mangosteen is and that the only place in the US where you can find it fresh is the is the big island. I hope you bought some!
I certainly did!
One of my favourite parts of any travel adventure is visiting local markets. And you are so right about bananas — one of the things I loved about travelling in Asia was all of the different bananas (which I think I pretty much lived on for a couple of months). Will be waiting to see what you cook up after all that!
How fun! I would love to try all those different bananas.
We had mangosteen and rambutan on our trip to Thailand, cannot wait until they are approved for import to SoCal.
Safe travels Greg! Looking forward to your new Hawaiian recipes.

Greg, it looks as though you have had a fantastic trip to Hawaii. What wonderful, unusual finds at the farmer’s market.
Thanks for a glimpse at this gorgeous Hawaiian Farmers’ market! Beautiful! I’m off to catch up with your other posts from Hawaii.
I love that market! Whenever I visit my friend who lives in Waipi’o, we’d go there at least once a week to pick up flowers and fruits.
Who could go to Hawaii without taking advantage of all the wonderful, fresh fruit? Not Greg for sure (smile). Ooh, and I didn’t know to choose a hard green coconut. I bet I can find one around here actually. Yeah!
That would be an amazing farmers market to visit. Hope the rest of your trip goes well. (Sorry for making your stumble queue so large, I finally got back into posting)
Oooh a real Hawaiin market? Lucky! It looks beautiful and exotic! I was at our market this morning but now I wished I had gone to this one.
Hey buddy,
was at that market almost a year and a half ago when we were on our honeymoon in HI. All of your images are making me wish I was back on the Island. Have a great rest of your trip!
