With a light citrus nose and the palest hint of grassy green, this typically acidic Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and zingy. Making it an excellent pairing with many foods. It has a vibrant fruitiness that is well balanced by a crisp lingering finish, and is best when enjoyed young. Which makes this wine a perfect foil to the bold spice and luscious, full-mouth texture of this roasted carrot salad with its hints of rich caramel overlaid with savory goat cheese.
Although I am not an overt fan of this varietal, when it’s right it’s right! And New Zealand is fast becoming associated with this grape. These wines are known to vary in intensity, depending on the region and winemaking styles. These new world Sauvignon Blancs demonstrate an in your face zing and pizzaz of fruit without the subtle minerality of old world Sancerres and Puilly Fumés. It’s not that one is “better” than the other, merely stylistically different. Wines from the Marlborough region are renowned for their aggressive Sauvignon characteristics, which can vary from the lightest herbaceous green aroma to full-fledged tropical fruit flavor. So taste as you go. And for the money, this is a great place to start. GRANT

Goodness gracious, do I need to catch up on my blog reading. Since I grew up in an immigrant household, we’ve NEVER had this green bean casserole. Mashed potatoes from the box, yes, but we didn’t know any better to make this casserole or that sweet potato dish with the marshmallows on top. I agree that veggies should be light. I just pre-blanch haricots verts and toss them in a light sauce (little fat) and roast winter vegetables. Nice salad with roasted beets, goat cheese and arugula. Your gratinate looks beautiful, btw!
…And that’s the way I like ’em. Great recipes and great photos. I particularly like the first photo with the elegantly splayed beans. I don’t actually include green beans in my Thanksgiving repertoire but you’ve just given me two good reasons to reconsider.
Also: fantastic blog. Have just come across it and am reading all the way down.
I Hope you had a lovely thanksgiving with friends and family! No green bean casserole has ever graced our table! No not a one!
A fabulous menu Greg! Enjoy today all these delicacies 🙂
Happy Thanksgiving!!
Cheers,
Gera
I am doing Spinach this year…I strayed from my GBC roots a long time ago, and always look for refreshing and healthier versions of vegetable…love the lemon accent. Why is it I feel like your table settings make me want to run to the beach and have a picnic…
that she’s going to kick your ass if you keep dissing her family secret (Campbell’s mushroom soup cough cough) green bean casserole!
I love both, but the second one is the one I want right now. Do the cherry tomatoes get too hot if you bite into them right away?
Happy Thanksgiving Sippity Sup!!
The salty goo (aka green bean casserole) will be on our table this Thanksgiving… I don’t make the meal… I just show up with a plate of cookies 😉
I’d like to know when it became law that we had to make that cassarole for Thanksgiving. You won’t find it on my table and I love these recipe suggestions. Great Post. I’ve been reading you for a couple of weeks now, really enjoying your blog.
I love that you don’t eat that hot mess of soggy green beans ever. I have never understood the obsession with it. I would choose your lovely dishes any time!
Ooo…I really need to finalize my Thanksgiving menu. I think you just gave me an idea for my green beans. Thanks Greg!!
Dreaming of green beans… love crunchy things! Great idea to add panko. Happy Thanksgiving!
Great green beans Greg. The lemon thyme panko crumbs sound fantastic and so fresh.
I won’t allow that Grandma green bean thing in our house either, even if my husband’s best childhood friend always had to have it. No sir. Not at my house either. We didn’t have it growing up because my mother never discovered the canned soup isle. She made everything fresh from scratch. Bless her heart we did eat healthy.
Hope you have a very happy Thanksgiving.
