Matua Valley Sauvignon Blanc, Marlborough

matua sauvignon blancWith a light citrus nose and the palest hint of grassy green, this typically acidic Sauvignon Blanc is fresh and zingy. Making it an excellent pairing with many foods. It has a vibrant fruitiness that is well balanced by a crisp lingering finish, and is best when enjoyed young. Which makes this wine a perfect foil to the bold spice and luscious, full-mouth texture of this roasted carrot salad with its hints of rich caramel overlaid with savory goat cheese.

Although I am not an overt fan of this varietal, when it’s right it’s right! And New Zealand is fast becoming associated with this grape. These wines are known to vary in intensity, depending on the region and winemaking styles. These new world Sauvignon Blancs demonstrate an in your face zing and pizzaz of fruit without the subtle minerality of old world Sancerres and Puilly Fumés. It’s not that one is “better” than the other, merely stylistically different. Wines from the Marlborough region are renowned for their aggressive Sauvignon characteristics, which can vary from the lightest herbaceous green aroma to full-fledged tropical fruit flavor. So taste as you go. And for the money, this is a great place to start. GRANT
