Domaine Zind-Humbrecht Riesling

Reisling Label

Pale straw in color with apple, peach, floral and spice aromas and flavors. The intrinsic Alsatian characteristics of minerality and bright acidity are why this wine is such a perfect pairing with goose. The riesling’s flinty tones pick up on the earthiness of the goose, and the sharpness from the acid balances the bird’s opulent, fatty texture. Also, the wine’s sweet spices are underscored by the sweetness of the perfectly caramelized goose skin, and the sherry-laced gravy. Most treatments of goose could also handle a red wine, but I prefer this spicy and racy riesling for the Holidays.

Although technically located in France, the Alsace wine region straddles both French and German cultures and wine making traditions. The region’s white wines are typically fruity, full-to-medium-bodied, and typically bone-dry. Unlike most of France, Alsatian wines take their names from local grape varieties, rather than the locations. For me, the most important are Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris (also called Tokay). I consider them all very food-friendly, and collectively can take on everything from the most delicate fish, to the intense flavors of game fowl or even venison! Also look for Cremant d’Alsace as a great alternative to Champagne. GRANT
