Capezzana Barco Reale di Carmignano

This Tuscan Sangiovese-based wine is deep purple in color, and opens with sweet red fruits, leather, oak and spice on the nose. Typically Tuscan on the palate, with flavors of sour cherry, darker fruits, licorice and a hint of prune.  Yet this wine is bigger than a lot of Tuscan reds, however, and is quite comfortable when paired with Greg’s roasted rack of lamb.  The sweet but firm tannins, ample acidity, and oaky finish are softened by the richness of the lamb, and the wine’s surprising slight saltiness complements the roast’s salty, nutty crust.

Any discussion of Tuscan red wines has to include the two most obvious subjects: Super-Tuscans and Chianti.  Super-Tuscans began as “Chianti-style” wines that ignored the restrictive Chianti DOC regulations, which at the time, prohibited the use of certain desirable grapes.  Since then, Chianti DOC regulations have been changed to allow up to 20% of newly approved varietals such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, or Syrah.  Wines from Carmignano, however, have the centuries-long distinction of blending Cabernet Sauvignon with Sangiovese–long before the Super-Tuscan trend.
