WINE: Wente Vineyards "Nth Degree" Livermore Valley Cabernet 2006
Deep ruby red in color, featuring aromas of dark fruits, toasty oak and a touch of bright cranberry, this "small-production" offering from Wente Vineyards drinks like a big Napa Cab. Dark plum and black cherry dominate the palate, and nice undertones of earth and chocolate sneak up on you. This is a "steakhouse" wine, so it's a no-brainer pairing with Greg's Green Peppercorn Filet of Beef. The wine's fruit complements the fruity elements of the sauce, the earthiness works well with the peppercorns, and the wine's bold tannins are softened by the fillet's buttery texture.
Livermore Valley is perhaps the most notable wine district of the San Francisco Bay wine region. While white wine grapes, including Sauvignon Blanc dominate, there is small amounts of red Bordeaux varietals as well. Wente Vineyards is the big name here. The San Francisco Bay region also includes the Santa Cruz Mountains AVA, as well as the even smaller Santa Clara Valley AVA. Due to it's proximity to the city of San Francisco, this entire wine region is facing extinction, as urban sprawl gobbles up vineyard lands.
