BEER: New Belgium Brewing ‘Fat Tire’ Amber Ale

FOOD: Ale-Braised Short Rib Sandwich with Cheddar & Horseradish

‘Fat Tire’ an American Amber Ale, is the flagship brew of Colorado's New Belgium Brewery. It has a clear, copper-orange body with long lasting, lacy two-finger, off-white head that can easily rise above the edge of the glass. With a sweet, biscuity malt and a whiff of citrus its first impression sets the palate for food. But what makes it particularly right with the richness of this beef sandwich is its subdued, earthy hop-bitterness. Which helps balance the malt, letting the subtle sour notes in the pickled vegetables stand up and be noticed.

The genesis of ‘Fat Tire’ was a bicycle trip through Belgium back in 1989. As New Belgium's founder, Jeff Lebesch, made his way through the villages, he fell in love with ales and the Belgian style of brewing. Upon returning to Colorado, he began experimenting with beers of his own. The result was ‘Fat Tire’ and ‘Abbey Belgian Ale’.
