Two more recipes for your consideration!

In this the last of my Thanksgiving Double-Takes, I am tackling the green beans. Green beans are usually seen this time of year in an oozy-gooey, over-baked casserole topped with something crunchy that I can never actually identify.

Well I have a confession. I won’t eat that. I won’t watch you eat that, and I certainly am not cooking that and putting that mess on my lovely blog! I won’t do it.

But I do understand tradition. Really, really I do. And I know a whole lot of you require this side dish each and every Thanksgiving. The funny thing is you require it, with out really liking it. Come on admit it, you don’t really like it. Just ‘cuz your Gramma made it a certain way you feel obligated to reproduce it just so. Then you force yourself to choke back a few mouthfuls every year. It’s a tradition, right?

Well not at Sups! house. Not now. Not ever…

green bean ingredientsNow calm down, there is no reason to call your Gramma. She doesn’t really like these green beans either. Nope, she made 'em because she thought you liked ‘em. Besides, I still plan on having green beans. I even have 2 versions of green beans for you during this week of classic Thanksgiving dishes done two ways. One of these ways is even a casserole. But I prefer to call it a gratinate­, which is really just the Italian word for casserole.

But hold your horses before I get to the casserole (which in no way resembles that ugly mess I just banned from SippitySup) let me show you how I am doing the green beans at my house this year.

I am taking this opportunity to put a flavorful green, crisp healthy vegetable on my Thanksgiving table. There are quite a few heavy dishes already on the menu and I am afraid I won’t be able to lift the plate if I have to pile on one more rich dish!

I am making Green Beans with Lemon-Thyme Breadcrumbs they are going to be simply sautéed with the bright flavors of lemon and thyme. The panko bread crumb topping ensures that it has all the crunchy allure of your Gramma’s version, so it will feel comfortable and familiar. But where I have skimped on cream, I have not skimped on flavor. Because this casserole has all classic flavors of Italy. Tomatoes, basil, and mozzarella are baked right along with these green beans. There is even a crunchy topping that is delicious.

And the best part– every ingredient in this version is identifiable!

Goodness gracious, do I need

Goodness gracious, do I need to catch up on my blog reading. Since I grew up in an immigrant household, we've NEVER had this green bean casserole. Mashed potatoes from the box, yes, but we didn't know any better to make this casserole or that sweet potato dish with the marshmallows on top. I agree that veggies should be light. I just pre-blanch haricots verts and toss them in a light sauce (little fat) and roast winter vegetables. Nice salad with roasted beets, goat cheese and arugula. Your gratinate looks beautiful, btw!

More green beans than you can shake a stick at

...And that's the way I like 'em. Great recipes and great photos. I particularly like the first photo with the elegantly splayed beans. I don't actually include green beans in my Thanksgiving repertoire but you've just given me two good reasons to reconsider.

Also: fantastic blog. Have just come across it and am reading all the way down.

I am doing Spinach this year...I strayed from my GBC roots a long time ago, and always look for refreshing and healthier versions of vegetable...love the lemon accent. Why is it I feel like your table settings make me want to run to the beach and have a picnic...

that she's going to kick your ass if you keep dissing her family secret (Campbell's mushroom soup cough cough) green bean casserole!

I love both, but the second one is the one I want right now. Do the cherry tomatoes get too hot if you bite into them right away?

Green Beans

I'd like to know when it became law that we had to make that cassarole for Thanksgiving. You won't find it on my table and I love these recipe suggestions. Great Post. I've been reading you for a couple of weeks now, really enjoying your blog.

Great green beans Greg. The lemon thyme panko crumbs sound fantastic and so fresh.

I won't allow that Grandma green bean thing in our house either, even if my husband's best childhood friend always had to have it. No sir. Not at my house either. We didn't have it growing up because my mother never discovered the canned soup isle. She made everything fresh from scratch. Bless her heart we did eat healthy.
