WINE: 2007 Edmeades Mendocino Zinfandel
Aromas of raspberries, blackberries and a little campfire smoke introduce this ruby-colored Zinfandel. The palate is very layered and complex, with flavors of baked berries, toast, and a little roasted meatiness to pair with the smokey flavor of grilled sausage. The wine finishes with a touch of fresh-cracked black-pepper, matching the peppery arugula pesto.
Zinfandel is considered America’s own varietal. Almost produced exclusively in California, Zinfandel probably originated in Croatia, and is almost identical to Southern Italy’s beloved Primitivo. Zinfandel is produced in several styles ranging from jammy and juicy, to full-bodied and rustic. I choose to leave White Zinfandel out of the discussion!
