WINE: 2007 d'Arenberg The Stump Jump Red FOOD: "Wine and Cheese" Burger
With an aromatic nose of ripe red berries, and a hint of baking spices and white pepper, this medium-bodied blend is a great burger wine. On the palate, the wine shows red currant, raspberries, ripe plum, a bit of licorice, and velvety soft tannins. The fruitiness from the Aussie-style Grenache and Shiraz keep it easy-going and great for outdoor dining, while the Mourvedre provides enough body and savory texture to compliment the bold flavors of bleu cheese and onions.
This wine falls under the "Rhone Ranger" style of wine-making, using a variety of grapes typically used to make wine in France's Rhone Valley. In particular, the combination of Grenache, Syrah (or Shiraz), and Mourvedre emulates the famous and often expensive Chateauneuf-du-Pape wines of the Southern Rhone.
