2011 V. Sattui Secco Riesling

V. Sattui Riesling wine pairing from Sippity Sup

V. Sattui Secco Riesling. Rieslings can confound wine buyers. The varietal typically runs the gamut from bone dry to very sweet, so having “secco” in the name is a helpful clue. This delightfully dry, crisp wine from California’s Napa Valley has a touch of honeyed sweetness at the tip of the tongue. Flavors of apricot and ripe white peach and a hint of vanilla are delivered with a lively acidity, making this wine a wonderful complement to spicy or slightly sweet dishes. Greg’s almond-meal crusted tilapia and spicy asian vegetables balance the acidity in the wine and bring out the sweetness lurking beneath the surface. This medium-bodied, easy-drinking wine would also pair well with smoked fish and meat, Thai food (pad thai comes to mind) or even a tuna salad sandwich.

Germany is considered the top producer of high quality Rieslings (along with Austria and Alsace– literally– on the side). The region’s cool dry climate permits long ripening periods which produce intense yet subtle flavors. The northern Napa Valley has similar conditions, created by its warm summer days and cool evenings, long growing season, minimal summer rain and chilly Humboldt fog. The V. Sattui Winery’s combination of terroir and biodynamic, organic winemaking practices create a lovely 100% Napa Riesling that’s both good with food and good for the planet.
